A study is nearing completion by the Suffolk County Department of Public Works to examine conditions and make recommendations for improvements on Suffolk County Road 97, Nicolls Road, in the Towns of Brookhaven and Islip . The study has made projections regarding future conditions on the road, and long-term corridor wide improvement alternatives have been developed for further analysis. Click the “Progress“ link above for additional details discussion of these alternatives.
Several Near Term Improvement projects are also being considered, which address existing safety and capacity deficiencies at critical locations identified through the analysis and ongoing public input processes. The link below provides important information regarding the first of these near term projects.
The community's input has been vital to the development of solutions which incorporate environmental and community concerns and the extensive public information effort, including this website, is ongoing.
The portion of CR97 Nicolls Road considered includes approximately 13 miles of roadway, from Sunrise Highway (NYS Route 27) in the south to North Country Road ( NYS Route 25A) inclusive, in the north. Nicolls Road , a major north-south arterial, forms a vital link in Suffolk County 's transportation system. It links the area's major east-west corridors: Montauk Highway (County Road 80), The Long Island Expressway, Sunrise Highway (New York State Route 27), Middle Country Road (NYS Route 25), Nesconset Highway (NYS Route 347) and North Country Road (NYS Route 25A, and provides direct access to the SUNY Stony Brook Campus, the Suffolk County Community College Campus, and the University Hospital at Stony Brook, as well as indirect access to large areas of residential and commercial development. Seventeen bridges pass over or under Nicolls Road within the study area.
Because of the access it provides, Nicolls Road carries a great deal of traffic, and traffic volumes on the roadway have been growing faster than those on many other area roadways. During the peak weekday commuter time periods, the facility is at or over capacity at some locations, and other locations are approaching capacity. Congestion is becoming a regular occurrence at some locations during peak travel times.
